[78-L] Phil Schaap

I've told this story before, but it bears repeating. He wrote extensive
liner notes for a reissue of "Lady Sings the Blues" and listed one of the
singers as Lois Winters. Except the lady's correct name is Lois Winter. I
contacted him through a friend, left a message on his answering machine,
and then got an answer back from him saying that he got the information
from Ray Ellis (the arranger) himself. I left him another message telling
him that I knew Lois, had been on a record date with her, could attest that
she was one the busiest lead group singers of that era, and that the error
should be corrected. I never heard from him, but met him at a party later.
He tap-danced around the mistake, and I clearly got the impression that he
is yet another 'historian' who doesn't like to admit when he's wrong.

Enough said.
