[78-L] classical piano on cylinder

There are not a lot, but what there are have merit. Bettini issued some very good cylinders of Chopin and Liszt extracts by Joseph Pizzarello; those I've heard show Pizzarello to be a sensitive musician, but good luck finding them. Equally rare are British pianist Lillian Bryant's Edison-Bell and Pathe cylinders, but if you find any, they're fine performances. Edison made a few wax Amberols of Andre Benoist (principally an accompanist, and one of the greats there) and the Dutch pianist Karel Bondam, but again those are very scarce. (Bondam's "Spinning Song" by Stephen Heller, only issued as a wax Amberol, is exquisite.) The Blue Amberol dubs of Benoist's and Walter Chapman's Diamond Discs came off very badly in the transfers, so I can't recommend them. About the most impressive piano cylinder I have, and one that crops up for sale now and again, is the Mendelssohn Rondo Capriccioso (lacking its introductory Andante) on Indestructible, played by Albert W. Ketelbey and recorded in London in 1910. Ketelbey was a very fine pianist, and he flies through the piece with considerable panache. I believe it was his only piano solo recording. I'm sure there are more, but very hard to trace. Philip Carli

Subject: [78-L] classical piano on cylinder

I'm a disc collector. I have a few cylinders but no machine to play them
on. Not an area I have put much time or energy into exploring.

So I'm wondering if there was much serious piano music recorded, or any,
on cylinder. I have never come across references to any. What I am aware
of are experimental recordings, like those by Hofmann, Albeniz, and a
few others. Nothing commercially recorded that may compare to those by
the same pioneers who made quite a few acoustical discs recordings. Like
Pachmann, Paderewski, or Cortot.

Or have I just missed them?
