And what's the explanation for the sudden, drastic change in sound quality
starting some time in 1930 or 1931, and continuing (I expect) until
Brunswick matrices began to be recorded by ARC, in which powerful bass and
reasonably clean, extended highs were replaced with a thinner balance and
an apparent switch to multiple and close miking, giving an in-your-face
effect with considerable distortion on louder passages (think Abe Lyman on
6125, Los Angeles matrix from 12 April 1931) and even vocals (Cab
Calloway's 'Minnie the moocher' on 6074, New York matrix from 3 March 1931)?
