For those who will be staying a few extra days, I heartily recommend a visit to the Nethercutt Collection.

http://nethercuttcollection.org/Collection.aspx

This museum houses many antique restored automobiles plus another museum of automatic music machines, similar to the ones collected by Jasper Sanfilippo, whose collection we saw at the Milwaukee ARSC conference four years ago. The Nethercutt isn't nearly as large, but they do have demonstrations of their orchestrions, music boxes, nickelodeons, and phonographs. There is also a Wurlitzer pipe organ that is one of the largest in the world (4 banks). Admission is free, but guided tours are limited to Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Self-guided are available Tuesdays through Saturdays. I've lived in the L.A. area nearly my entire life, but it was only a few years ago that I discovered this treasure. The museum is located in Sylmar (yes, friends, the epicenter of the 1971 earthquake), about 20 minutes from downtown (on a good traffic day).

> First off, for those flying in to LA for the ARSC Conference, I want to encourage you to stay for an extra day or so - or come in early - as there is so much to see in LA and the Conference pgm is jam packed so there is little free time to explore - and you've already paid for your airfare. Also, MOST airfares are higher - significantly - on Sunday vs Monday flights and it may save you as much as hotel for night.

> When I flew out for the Fall Board meeting I stayed an extra 5 days. One was to see relatives but exploring Hollywood one day (an easy Metro ride away so no car needed) and the Music Center - Disney Hall and Art museums another.
>
> That said, I'm planning to fly home on Monday (I made various Sunday plans) and am looking to share my room at the Wilshire Grand with a non-smoker/non-snorer. If you are interested, please email me OFF list at StevenrammATaolDOTcom.
