I don't know where the episode of "Rawhide" was
set, but there are places in the cattle country
of the time that would have had daylight at 4:30 AM at some times of the 
year.

I dimly recall, many years ago, a period when the US (and by extension
Canada) had DST for the whole year! As a result, here in Toronto (it
was worse to our north...!) one had to get up and go to work before
the sun rose in much of the winter. As it is, the sun is barely up by 0800
(when I would grudgingly get up back when I was working!). I also
recall being in Europe (mostly Garmisch-Partenkirchen Germany)...
where the sun rose and set on a different schedule than I was used to!
