40 degrees north is just north of Carson City, 
Nevada, just south of Salt Lake City and just a 
bit north of Denver. The Kansas-Nebraska border 
follows the 40th parallel. That's just the west. 
I don't know where the episode of "Rawhide" was 
set, but there are places in the cattle country 
of the time that would have had daylight at 4:30 AM at some times of the year.
