I actually saw a couple of these at the last Vintage Voltage show in Denver in August. They were usually found in motels of lesser quality and would afford the weary traveller access to their favorite radio programs... or so the ads for them stated. Remember, there was still radio drama going on in the 1950s in the US, not to mention sport broadcasts, and portable radios were usually reserved for the middle-to-upper class.
Hope this helps clear the static :)
Brad

Subject: [78-L] OT? Coin operated radio
Could someone in the U.S. give a brief answer to me ? Why would one have had a coin-operated radio and who would the customers be ? Would it be some precursor to the jukebox for a bar or tavern ? Or was it designed that you could "hire it" like you could with televisions in the 70s (at least) so you put your coins in and maybe an internal "clock" would run for a week eBay item 150423686375 just for information as it inspired my thoughts.
