Subject: Waring's Canadian connection

        Gee, it pays to read!

I was reading McNamara & Lomas' "Bands Canadians danced to" (1973)
on the weekend. It described the Culley Brothers as a top notch
organization which was prevented from touring in the U.S.A. because
of the one-way immigration restriction enforced by the Wickersham
Commission. (Like the disastrous Smoot-Hawley trade commission,
but different.) It was one of the America-first, protectionist
policies which are considered to have prolonged the economic
        depression of the 1930's.

Any way, three out of four Culley brothers were able to return to
the main Waring orgnanization as individuals; Fred (violin) was
musical director and stayed for decades; George (trumpet) stayed
until his death in 1948; and Edwin (sax) faced travel restrictions
because of the above mentioned commission, and had to drop out in
        1934.
