In the tape age some jazz musicians recorded their own performances.
Charlie Mingus (Massey Hall concert, 1953) and Lennie Tristano come to
mind. How did they manage to do this whilst playing. In other words, who
kept their eyes on the VU meter? And, with Tristano being blind, how did
he manage it? Did they set a "safe" level before starting?
