Folks,

I was looking up Bennie Moten's *South* for someone tonight and bumped
into a question. Moten recorded *South* only twice correct? Once for Okeh
and once for VTMCo.?
One of my meager sources lists Okeh 8194 with *Vine Street Blues* on the
flip and a matrix number 8769-B, but another source lists it as 9184-B with
no mention of a flip side recording. Both give a date of Nov. 29, 1924
although one adds a question mark to that date. Which catalogue is correct?
For the Victor recording I have once source listing V-38021-A and 24893-A
and the other listing just the V-38021 and a matrix number 42935-1, the
former also gives *She's No Trouble* as the B-side of both numbers.
September 7, 1928 is given as a recording date from both sources.
I'm curious why two Victor numbers. Also how long was this in the
catalogue? At what point was it "re-issued" I have both "Circle Victor" &
"Circle RCA Victor" pressings, but not a Scroll. The "Circle Victor" is
numbered 24893, I can't locate the RCA to check that one. I know this was
deservedly a very popular recording so I'm sure it was carried for a long
time. Also someone told me a story probably apocryphal that at one point *
South* was issued on both sides of a record. I doubt it, but I thought I'd
better ask the experts! Thank you in advance.

Regards,
John B.
