I'm so sorry to hear this news. A dear friend and colleague for over 20 years and was a huge help for anything we needed in the Columbia/Sony archives. I remember not agreeing with everything he wrote in his liner notes but once I met and worked with him on many of our Mosaic sets I appreciated and loved his unabashed opinion and wicked sense of humor. I was so happy he came to Battery Studios to visit and bring source material so that his long time engineering partner Matt Cavaluzzo could transfer rare Teddy Wilson sides for our Wilson set.

RIP Michael.

Hi Everybody,

Geri rotella sent me the below links. Her Dad was a song writer Johnny Rotella. She has put together a web site featuring her Dad music and she is looking for help to try to figure out who were the singers on the below songs written by her Dad. Any ideas?

Thank you so much,

Walden

Meanwhile I would love to point out some tracks that are frustrating me because I cannot find the vocalists names :( I will list them here for you with links to the tracks. any idea on who they might be? The male singer on Tillie's Tune has such a distinct voice, it seems like he might be easiest to find?

Here you go Sherlock Holmes :)

Let me know if we can still speak....

all the best

Geri

The more astute and connected already know this, I'm sure, but I just stumbled on this tonight.

Well, that makes me sad.? I was introduced to his unique perspectives
way back in 1978 when I picked up a series of Bing Crosby reissue albums
that he produced for Columbia.? The casual observations and flights of
fancy in his liner notes were something to behold.? I was corrupted for
life by his comments about the Guy Lombardo band.? He noted that that
listening to the sax section was like being engulfed by a giant placenta.

The liner notes on the identical inner sleeves on those three Columbia Bing albums were also my first introduction to Michael Brooks. The graphics of all those colorful labels on the Unipac jackets were what grabbed you to a set featuring Bing Columbia?s that had never been reissued on lp before, but his notes explained why you should care. What was most striking was his telling of his unsatisfactory meeting with Bing ? a story he could tell now that Bing was gone.

I first met Mike when he was working in the Swing Shop in South London in
the early 1960s. I'd gone in there with what I thought was a Chick Bullock
78 on Imperial that I'd just purchased, and he pointed out that it wasn't
him! Turned out to be Sid Gary[r]y.

At some point I got to understand that he didn't care that much for Charlie
Christian.

I headed for the CD box of the Bing Columbia CROONER set last night and have been enjoying revisiting it and Michael's sassy notes. He certainly had a way with words! He pissed me off with his notes to the Glenn Miller Ace Of Hearts LP (Glenn's 1937 Decca session), referring the band as a "bunch of bland, soporific Trilbys," but it was a memorable turn of phrase!
