[78-L] Columbia LP "5" prefix ???

Steve Smolian on ARSCLIST confirms this was a code to charge 5.98 instead
of 4.98. It disappeared after about 1955.
No one indicated if the Porter Album also appears without the 5 in the ML
series. Anyone have one???

I don't know if the 5 was added to albums they wanted to sell for more
(although they had the K for that purpose) or just to keep them from looking
like old releases after 1955. Seems to me the 1951 Prades Festival albums
have ML 5xxxx numbers on grey label 6-eye pressings.
