Never seen it, Thomas, but certainly read about it, notably in a remarkably
enthusiastic New Yorker article by Whitney Balliett "The Real Jelly Roll",
May 1994.

Dunno about Virginia Mayo but according to the article "French Quarter" also
starred Vernel Bagneris, New Orleans born, playing the role of Morton.
Bagneris went on to write and perform in One Mo' Time and (back on topic
again, just about) an off-Broadway show entitled "Jelly Roll Morton - a
Me-Morial" with the incomparable Morten Gunnar Larsen playing piano: that's
what Balliett was writing about. I never saw the show, but from the CD,
Bagneris *is* Morton's persona, and Larsen *is* his piano-playing.

Bagneris was born in 1949 and Larsen in 1955 so neither can have recorded on
78 except by accident in infancy, but that's no reason for not enjoying. To
appreciate Larsen playing Morton on his own, try Shreveport Stomp at the
Blind Boone Festival a decade later:

Norwegian-flag tie at the end.

Anyone know the film FRENCH QUARTER (Crown International, 1978).

Credits include Allen Jaffe and William Russell.

R rated, from seemingly Sleaze producing company, film set against New
Orleans background Blue Book establishments. Cast includes Virginia Mayo.
Music credit Dick Hyman.

Wonder if Jaffe or Russell ever commented on it ?????

Thanks!

Best wishes, Thomas.
