My fellow radio man Matt the Cat did a whole hour radio show of
follow-up and answer songs on just one song: Hank Balllard and his
Midnighter's Work With Me Annie. These included their own
songs Annie Had A Baby and Annie's Aunt Fannie, Etta James' Dance
with me Henry (a.k.a. the Wallflower), Danny Taylor's I'm the father
of Annie's Baby, Linda Hayes' My Name Ain't Annie, the Champions'
Annie Met Henry, the El Dorados' Annie's Answer, the Hollywood
Flames' Annie Don't Love Me No More, and a cover of the original Work
With Me Annie by the "Five" Royales.
I'm going to do a theme show on answers and sequel songs myself some
day, they're ubiquitous. Other great series for instance is around
the person of Deacon Jones (originally Louis Jordan, e.g. used in
Good Rocking Tonight), the question who threw the whiskey in the well
(Lucky Millinder with Wynonie Harris), the person of Caldonia (also
originally from Louis Jordan) and even these three connect in Bull
Moose Jackson's I know whe threw the whiskey in the well.
