Yeh, my HMV of 'Sold American' is definitely not a dub.
I have little use for 78 rpm to 78 dubs. With a label like Pathe you have to accept cylinder to 78 dubs.
Lacquer to 78, depends if there's a good CD transfer of the lacquer disc. I
Tape to 78 can sound really good, if it was a good cutting. So, I'm always curious about those. Even common things like tape recorded Les Paul Capitol 78 records just have more bollocks on 78.

I certainly prefer master pressings, especially if I'm expected to pay a chunk-o'-change for the rekkud. I'm not particularly fussy about the label being first-state or what-have-ya (i.e., gotta be a Victor Scroll label of catalog number 20944 with A stampers both sides and "Orthophonic Recording" left of the hole, not above Nipper), but unless a dub is all there is (Victor 23041-A "I'm So In Love With You" by Ellington comes to mind; there are others), I want a master-pressed copy.
Another example: Bluebird B-10352-A "Sold American" by Glenn Miller exists both as master-pressed and dubbed copies, even on the original label. I lucked out and found a master-pressed copy. The HMV is the same way, I think. It's worth the time and effort to secure a master-pressed copy. Even the Bluebird LP "Complete Glenn Miller Vol. 2" used the dub master.
Now, since most Columbias 1939 and later (as well as allied labels) are dubbed from 16-inch lacquers, I guess we're stuck with dubs for those...<grin>
Take care,
