[78-L] Columbia Vertical Cuts

Something interesting I just noticed in the Columbia Master Books, volume 1..a 
few recordings "mastered as vertical test" in September and October, 1910. 
Records include 4924, Prince's Band: Silver Bell; 4921, Ada Jones: The Dublin 
Rag, and about a half dozen others. Anyone know if Columbia was planning on 
issuing hill-and-dales or doing this for a client?
