Bix's father was the son of immigrants from Germany, where the final "e"
would have been pronounced, rendering it bye-der-bek-keh. However, as a
second-generation American the pronunciation of his name would have been
Anglicized most likely by the time he was born. Certainly by the time
the US got involved in the first World War.
