Here are mine, complete with reasons why...
1. Clay Custer - The Rocks (Okeh, 1923) - Admired this for a long time and saw it in an auction list and bid quite a bit. Won it (just!) and am proud to own it, especially in nice shape. Considered the first 'boogie woogie' record although I don't like the ''firsts'' term...(they are usually beaten to it by something earlier in some shape or form...)
2. Big Joe Williams - She Left Me A Mule (Trumpet, 1952) - Had heard this and loved it for ages and was pleased to get it on 78...this man never made a bad 78.
3. Canon Fleming - The Bells, Poe (G&T, 1907) - Saw this and was intrigued...had to have it and was glad I took a chance on it! Eerie!
4. Edgar Hayes - In the Mood (Brunswick, 1938) - Had been looking for this for around 15 years...heard it on the radio and loved it straight away...found one this year for £1 after buying a few 78s on ebay and asking if I could look at the other 78s he had...and there it was in a box of Vera Lynns...I deservedly had a cigar to celebrate finding this (not that I usually need a reason....you'd think it was an easy 78 to locate too!)
5. Beecham - Hebrides Overture (Columbia LX 747, late 30s?) - Not what I would usually buy but had really liked this piece for years but never knew what it was until I stumbled across it on Youtube and then searched for it...found with several other discs of that period and type for a few pounds at a flea market this year - very atmospheric version.
There are loads more - but there's 5 of 'em!
