Smack is one of my favorites, too. The trombone solo on this is terrific. Stark is erratic at the best of times and on this he's obviously tired, made worse by a horrible recording balance- Hawk sounds a bit weak and off-mike as well. BTW, Obie had nothing to do with the original recording session. Nada.

On 03/11/12 20:51, David Lewis wrote:> I think the Connie's Inn band of Fletcher Henderson was one of the greatest swing bands ever. But the trumpet solo that opens Crown 3107, "Somebody Stole My Gal," is vac at; whomever it is (maybe Rex Stewart?) has no lip left and piddles out a few notes here and there trying to get something out, totally failing to do so. This was take 3, and you've got to wonder why Obie didn't try takes 1 or 2, but perhaps they were even worse.> Uncle Dave Lewis> uncledavelewis at hotmail.com > _______________________________________________David,According to Walter Allen's "Hendersonia" the trumpet is by Bobby Stark. I'll give it a listen. Julian Vein_______________________________________________78-L mailing list78-L at klickitat.78online.comhttp://klickitat.78online.com/mailman/listinfo/78-l
