The song never was a hit, as defined by Joel Whitburn. His book on Pop
Memories goes back to 1890, but no mention.
It was recorded on cylinder around the time it was written. The Cylinder
Archive at UC Santa Barbara has such a cylinder but it is in such poor
condition that they could not transfer it or even identify the artist.

Could you be confusing it with the VERY similar song PLAYMATE(S) which was
popular in 1940 by Kay Kyser and revived in 1955 by the Fontane Sisters?
