If any of you are in Lubbock, TX this month (and who wouldn't be?) please
drop by the Buddy Holly Center for the exhibit "Texas Label 78s: From
Country to Bilingual Jive." It runs through August 18.

The country reference comes from the thought that when people think of
Texas they often think "country" and in fact the first Texas postwar indy
label was Gulf and they did country (the original 'Nails in My Coffin").
The bilingual jive reference is to a Sombrero 78 (Tequilla Chaser) that was
an answer record to "Tequilla" that had "bilingual jive" on the label as a
category.

The exhibit is in four galleries. The first is an overview that tells the
story of independent labels in Texas. The second is focused on West Texas
labels and on Slim Willet and Hoyle Nix. The third looks at the Texas
label 78s that made the Billboard charts (28 sides with 5 at #1). The
fourth and largest gallery is all about the Spanish Texas label 78s which I
am more and more falling in love with.

A 64-song soundtrack plays each day when the exhibit is open. The songs
are listed here.
