When word came of Dick's death, I recalled hearing Dick say in an interview that one of the selling points on "New Year's Rockin' Eve" from the Network standpoint was that the
traditional Guy Lombardo celebration was getting kind of stale, and that NYRE could provide some competition for it. Of course, Guy died in 1977, so after that the viewers more or
less shifted to Dick.

I told Allisyn, "By the time 2012 rolled around, New Year's Rockin' Eve was staler to the tenth power over any New Year's show Guy Lombardo did."
