The entire first chapter of this book deals with the origins of the
word 'jazz'. To answer your question, there are several after-the-fact
anecdotal accounts of the word being used in New Orleans to refer to
music prior to or around the time of the 1913 San Francisco baseball
reference. There seems to be nothing in print, though, before the ODJB
recordings starting in 1917.
