I've heard stories that in addition to New Orleans, San Francisco was a 
hotbed of jazz at the turn of the last century and that if it were not 
for the earthquake it, not New Orleans, would be considered the home of 
Jazz.  This article does not mention music, but it tells how the word 
Jazz was being used as a Baseball term in LA and SF in 1912 and 1913.
