[78-L] Lamination question

Well, we all know how good my memory isn't, but I seem to recall reading (on 78-L, I thought) a formula for such stuff, and "lampblack" was in the mix. That would leave a mess like that.

I've had a similar experience with some 20000 series Bill Monroe records recently. Seems like some others, too. I've taken to rubbing a little clear - neutral - shoe polish on the raw edges. Also had good luck doing this with other laminated records including DD Edisons and crumbled edges of Hit of the Weeks. After a few days you never know the polish was ever there. Apply sparingly and buff lightly.

When I wipe the edges of all 4 discs in this particular set with paper towels,
they exude enough black stuff to write a shopping list. Assuming you can finish
writing a shopping list with the edges of lightly dampened mid 40s Columbias
before they come and take you away.

Columbia's laminated pressing of the '40's didn't have nicely finished edges like the -D series so edges of discs on upright shelves got pulverized. I doubt that anything as pure as graphite would have been added unless maybe a pencil or two by accident.

Did we ever determine whether there was graphite in Columbia laminated pressings, particularly in the 40s? I'm cleaning a wartime set (Teddy Wilson& Billie Holiday) and I'm amazed at the amount of black stuff that comes off the edges.dl_______________________________________________78-L mailing list78-L at klickitat.78online.comhttp://klickitat.78online.com/mailman/listinfo/78-l
