What era? The Greenwood books take you through 1934, Rust's jazz and dance and 
entertainment books through 1942, Lord covers jazz up through yesterday, 
DISMARC will give you information on classical recordings, the various 
discographies of Bennett, Clooney, Sinatra and the like can get you pretty 
close with adjacent numbers.
