Budd did write for Arnheim during that period when that leader was playing
more swing music; I have no specifics, unfortunately. Stan Kenton was in the
band during that time, and Budd told me that Kenton asked him to look at
some of his writing and critique it.

Budd wrote for a lot of bands, and like Benny Carter, could write sweet as
well as swing. He wrote a great deal, for instance, for the Tony Pastor band
during 1945-7, ballads as well as jump numbers. He did tell me that he wrote
almost all of the arrangements for Eckstine when both were with Earl Hines.

He was an early supporter of the bebop 'movement,' and was the one who
encouraged the musicians to play the melodies in unison instead of
harmonized, so he often wrote bop-flavored arrangements for various
established bands (Krupa, as an example).

He is truly an underrated figure in jazz. I was his assistant during my
college years, and he was a gem of a man.
