Brad,
I assume you're trying to do a transfer to digital. What kind of DAC
converter or soundcard are you using?
I can tell you that when I used an internal soundcard years ago, it was
necessary to adjust record levels via software in the PC (Control Panel >
Sound And Audio Devices Properties). I now use an E-MU 0404 USB, which has
gain controls for right and left channel. Very handy feature for doing
transfers.
If you're limited in ability to adjust record levels, something that might
help is using a small DJ mixer between your PC and the line level source.
Most mixers will have gain controls, providing more flexibility in dealing
with "hot" sources as you're experiencing.
