I watched a drama last night which actually involved a 78. A girl in a
rich family in 1939 finds 78s hidden away and decides to play some of
them to other members of her family. Of course, as usual, the labels are
faked. She plays the 78 but instead of the expected "foxtrot" they hear
a conversation between two men. It turns out that a group of appeasers
are recording their conversations on 78 and pasting on
commercial-looking labels. She wanders over hill and dale (no pun
intended) with the 78, undecided as what to do with it until she decides
to post it to Winston Churchill.
It was a muddled plot, and the use of a 78 was unconvincing. Firstly,
the fake labels--if you're going to fake a label at least use the name
of a well-known company. Secondly, all the 78s were housed in paper
rather than cardboard sleeves indicating that they were post-war.
Thirdly, where would they have gotten the technology to produce fake labels?
At least they didn't refer to the discs as "78s"!
