Got a copy of Bear Family's "Bristol Sessions" box set, and it's superb in every way. Five CDs, impeccable mastering, and a fabulous 120-page hardbound book by Ted Olson and Tony Russell. Images of every Victor 78 label are included plus other issues on Bluebird, Montgomery Ward, Sunrise, Electradisk, and Aurora. (although the images of Sunrise and Electradisk do not have titles from the actual Bristol sessions). Images of the Victor session sheets are included in the discography. There are some wonderful period photos of Bristol, dozens of artist images, and lyrics for all the songs included. The set features all issued recordings made in Bristol, Tennessee between July 25 and August 5, 1927, and then, as a bonus, recordings made at Victor's return trip to the city from October 27 to November 4, 1928. Alternate takes and a few unissued titles are also included. Most of this recording activity was triggered by a simple ad for Victor phonographs in a local newspaper. A small box stating "The Victor Co. will have a recording machine in Bristol for 10 days beginning Monday to record records - Inquire at our Store" attracted the attention of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and a slew of other local acts. The highlight for me was the complete recordings of the fascinating Alfred G. Karnes, a minister and gospel singer who accompanied himself on a recently acquired $375 Gibson harp-guitar. The set is fascinating reading and listening - much more detailed than the Country Music Foundation 2-LP set issued about two decades ago. Bravo once again to Bear Family.
