Come on,  Stephen...the two alternatives you describe are not the only 
possible scenarios.    Many collections change hands privately or though 
auctions,  and are neither sold for top dollar nor thrown in the garbage.

No one is disputing that you can get hundreds or thousands of 78s for little 
or nothing...I'd wager that you're getting most of them for about what they 
are worth.

I would also say that there are more kinds of collectors and collecting than 
you seem willing to acknowledge...it's not all an either-or between what you 
do,  and some guy who spends thousands on jazz and blues rarities.  Plenty 
of us (and of all ages) collect with some kind of selectivity,  and also 
play and enjoy the records for the music on them.

And,  once again,  please know that there are younger 78 collectors out 
there...I mean people who are in their 20s and even in their teens.  I have 
met some.  They are real.  They do exist.   All 78s are not going to be 
hauled to the land-fill after you and I and others on 78-L have gone off to 
Shellac Heaven.
