David, You & I are not the only ones on the list with a house that we live
in
that is overflowing with records. As you may already know there are a few
others
on the list that have the same situation with the number of records owned in
the
home & perhaps in storage (hopefully climate controlled) like you have. Oh &
I
keep 2 window units running 24x7 in the garage to keep those records cool
during
the late spring to early fall months. Don't need them much during the
winter.
One thing I wonder does anybody keep records in the garage (instead of a car
&
other stuff) like I do? For me it's cheaper than keeping them in a storage
unit
even with the house A/C bill in the summer.

Sounds like home. Plus a few storage units in my case.

The garage is just fine where I'm living now and was fine where we lived
from
1987 to 2000. Not so fine was the garage in the semi-rural place we were in
for
9 years, prone to moisture, mice, the occasional other living creature that
managed to sneak under the door. And even a well-maintained storage unit
that
isn't climate controlled is fine, as long as you're sure the elements don't
encroach.

I have about 15,000 78s in my garage. It's sort of a half-way house. It's a
better environment than most of them came from but these are ones I haven't
had time to sort and clean and re-sleeve. The ones that are common and in
poor condition will be put out of their misery. Some will be part of a set
sale list I'm putting together for commons in excellent condition and ones
that are unusual or interesting. The keepers will be cleaned and added to
my database and brought into the house and into my "music room" as part of
my personal collection.
The garage has a concrete slab foundation and an attic exhaust fan to
control the summer's heat. Here in south Texas we don't have to worry about
excessive moisture so nothing bad has happened to any of them. In fact,
there was a moldy batch that came from Mississippi that can now be cleaned
fairly easily because the they have dried out.
I like buying 78s en masse because I learn so much. Sometimes it's an
artist I've seen but not heard. Sometimes it's a side by someone I don't
collect that I'll like. Sometimes it's a release by a label I've dismissed
like the two Coleman Hawkins on Rondo (1555 & 1556). Rondo? That batch I
recently bought in Houston has 25-30 different non-Ken G Rondos. Lately
I've been buying a lot of small label 78s. Most of the music is not great
but every so often.....................
I do so love this---it's way more than a hobby but still less than family
and friends. That's just about right.
