[78-L] WKRC Western swing festival on now!

As we all know WKCR is a college station . This one owned by Columbia
University.
All programs are hosted and produced by college students, many of whom are
without the requisite traning, historical
knowledge or perspective.
Many of the jazz festivals I listen to suffer the same fate. Just last year
one of the announcers told us that he would now play "Begin The Begyne"
by Arty Shaw.
On the other hand they play the original 78's in many cases, and it is the
only station in the country regularly broadcasting Jazz, Folk and Country
Music Festivals sourced from 78's.
They do week-long Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Roy Eldridge, Count Basie
and dozens of other salutes.
Much of the jazz material is run and organized by Phil Schaap, the well
known discographer and historian, but even Phil has to resort to the student
bench during these 24 hour per day, 7 days per week jamborees.
Obviously, the students have manifold responsibilities and their WKCR chores
only account for a small part of their university days.
They are volunteers and their expertise ranges from awful to pathetic in
many but not all cases.
I'm grateful to this station and to the University that sponsors, what to
most of the metro audience amounts to esoterica.
Long Live WKCR.

Al Simmons
