Spike Jones (who was on 78s) explained it very succinctly in the tune 
"Daddy Dear" on his album "Spike Jones Demonstrates Your Hi-Fi" or 
"Dinner Music For People Who Aren't Very Hungry" (which was not on 78s - 
well, some of the tunes were on 78s, but not the album).
Dah. Oh, yah!
