You want "corner taverns"...hie thyself to Milwaukee! There. every third
or fourth storefront is a beer joint...with its own bunch of "regulars!"
Sadly, "corner taverns" were never allowed to exist up here in Ontario;
"Licensed establishments" HAD to be "hotels" (with rooms!) until
1954 (IIRC)! In fact, Grossman's had to call itself a "Tavernette,"
because the use of "Tavern" or "Pub" (thus the "Imperial PUBlic
Library" in Toronto...which DID offer books!) was officially banned!

We drink up here...we're just NOT allowed to mention it...?!
