[78-L] Bye Bye, Borders

I went to the local Borders this evening, one of the ones
being shut down, in Gig Harbor, Washington (one of two in
this state). I picked up all three volumes of Edmund Morris'
biography of Teddy Roosevelt, and a couple history books.
But that Borders has only been in this town for a couple
years. The more tragic closing this week is the downtown
QFC store, which was once part of a local supermarket chain
(Uddenberg's Thriftway) that was one of the 100 biggest
employers in this state. The QFC brand is owned by (what
I'm told is) the big East Coast grocery chain Kroger's.
Some of the people working there I've known for 20 years.
I don't know anyone working at the Borders up by the
freeway. I feel a lot worse for the folks at the
grocery store.
