The "Popeye" voice on the Waring recordings is Poley McClintock.

shortpersonalities on record

A few years ago, I purchased my first William "Billy" Costello 78 from a
Kurt Nauck auction. I recently purchased Victor 20146-B, Bolshevik-Fox
Trot, Waring's Pennsylvanians, and there was the unmistakable Popeye The
Sailor Man voice again.

So this got me to thinking, Warner Brother's made dozens of animated shorts
featuring many famous recording and radio personalities. So, how many
animated short personalities were ever featured on 78 recordings? If anyone
is interested, I'd love for them to submit an article to In The Groove
recounting this fascinating interaction between entertainment mediums. I'd
also love an article just on William "Billy" Costello especially if anyone
has a photograph of him. There is so little known about this amazing,
though hard to work with talent. Please send your articles or questions to
me at Editor at MAPS-ITG.org

Thanks,
Tim McCormick, President (and editor)
