Thousands of mine have come from radio stations, DJs, record promo men,
the producers of the records, execs of the record companies, packaged as
bonus discs with regular catalog items, as well as used record stores,
libraries, and other usual sources.

I can think of HUNDREDS of LPs that were given or sold with promotional
markings.  ALL of the RCA Victor SP series, for example.  The Breck 1959
sampler, the two 1956 samplers in the plastic sleeves, the Glenn Miller
reissue shrinkwrapped with the Glenn Miller Today LP, the Moby Grape LP
shrinkwrapped with Grape Jam, several classical rehearsal LPs enclosed
in sets, and on and on and on.  The Victor Artists Party, for pete's
sake.  I guess that was the FIRST free promo LP!!
