The one program in particular I meant was one where more time is devoted to
pushing Jose and Amparo Iturbi's brand new recording of Rhapsody in Blue (on 45
or 78) than to actual story line, which is linked to someone needing to study
the piece. I don't remember any of those programs being that blatant, but they
must have given in once in a while. KFO was what finally convinced my dad to
buy a television set. He'd been on a tour adjudicating entries in a drama
festival and saw his first episodes in a Windsor hotel. Next step was to
Wasser's Radio-TV on McCaul Street, just a block away from where we lived, and
where I watched Howdy Doody for a few consecutive afternoons before the set was
finally delivered to our house. Big Admiral combination with a 3-speed
turntable (and a tone arm that gouged the shit out of every record, especially
when one got slightly delayed sliding down the spindle and landed on the arm
which was starting to replay the previous disc) and a radio and a 9-inch
speaker and a 17-inch picture. Pretty good stuff for 1950.
By the way, I named my rubber rabbit Fletcher. Now you know.
