Windex will ruin shellac since ammonia is a shellac solvent. it does not
seem to bother vinyl.

I've tried Windex and it trashed the surface of the records and the one
record
cleaner I tried was just as
bad.If ethyl alcohol works, what about a cheap vodka?I prefer gin but I save
that
for myself.I'm not a
vodka fan.

I've put Windex on a DD runout and waited.  I did not see any surface change
on a macro level.  I did not do microscopy.

Except DDs have no shellac, but are laminated with phenolic resin --
plastic.  Has anyone investigated in detail the effects of Windex (or other
glass cleaners) on it?  Alcohol (as Edison literature originally
recommended) only works on records that have been reasonably well kept (as
Edison lit originally assumed), at least in my experience.  Heavy grime and
grease seem to resist alcohol remarkably well.

Alcohol, the purer the better. I use methyl, but isopropyl or Everclear
(ethyl - the kind you can drink) will do just as well. As long as the
purtity approaches 100% (200 proof).
Rubbing alcohol and denatured alcohol both contain water which will be
left after the alcohol has evaporated, and that will never do.
Windex is no good for shellac, period.

dust-off with a carbon fibre brush.  Others will need aggressive cleaning.
