I think of it as "bus station music!" Back in the sixties and seventies I 
did a
LOT of Greyhound travel...and their stations all offered Muzak (or its
equivalents) as background. I also heard a lot in supermarkets...since
so much of the content was "old" (20's-30's) music, I c/would often
confuse other shoppers by singing along to it...?!
