The old fiberglas milk boxes which I have 250 or so of are the OLD size...in

that's why the store owner gave them to me (apparently the dairy no longer
used them, or wanted them back...they wouldn't pay his deposit return so he
wanted them out of his store!) I have always assumed the size change
wasn't metric-related...the dairy industry was tired of folks using their
milk boxes to store and move LP's, so they reduced the box size so they
could no longer contain LP's in jackets...!

REALLY old milk boxes were made out of heavy steel wire; I think I
probably own just one of those. They were quite a bit heavier in weight
than their plastic or fiberglas replacements! IIRC, they were used for
store quantities of glass bottles of milk; milk in waxed paperboard
containers (with little flaps keeping the hole closed) first appeared
after WWII IIRC.
