Thank you for your serious, informative, thought provoking reply.

I think you "hit the the nail on the head."

According to: http://www.southernjive.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=544 : 
"Tagging" is the equivalent of, or a variation to "Cutting In."  
"Tagging" may be "cutting in" with permission.  Tagging" or "Cutting 
In", without permission, is referred to as a "Steal."

Was "tagging" the same as "cutting in"?
Its been a few lifetimes since I was anywhere near a dance floor but
it seems that what was acceptable behavior at a prom could lead to
ugly confrontations elsewhere.

I have a photo from the 1930s of a Texas string band performing on a bandstand - there's a sign on the side that reads "No Tagging." Does anyone know what this means?
