When he first came to New York from Hungary, he was peniless. Rapee took 
him under his wing and gave him a job a the Capitol. He was asked to 
conduct in 1924 because of a sudden illness of Rapee and became regular 
when Rapee moved to Roxy in 1926. He did not become a US citizen until 
he moved to Minnesota.
