Country singer Jimmy Dean has died at the age of 81. Dean made 78s for 4 Star and Mercury in the 1950s and had hits of "Bumming Around" and "Release Me" early in his career. He hopped on the country-western "western saga" bandwagon in 1961 with "Big Bad John" for Columbia. He was also known to eat sausage a lot.

When every other radio station was giving me the runaround in 1981, Dean programmed my "Bob Wills Story" 10 hour documentary on the radio station he owned in Plainview, Texas and invited me to ride in their annual parade. Made me feel like a celebrity for a half hour, but Plainview was like Mayberry, not Pasadena. There were probably more people in the parade than watching it. Still, it was fun.
