Understand that there exist two different methods per trans-Atlantic postal 
mail! It can
travel by boat (even yet?!) or by air. Since you probably didn't 
specifically specify
"air mail," the envelope/parcel probably crossed the ocean in a "cargo hold" 
of a
transatlantic steamer (VERY slowly!). However, it could have been worse...it 
might
have travelled in a boat "powered" by impressed-servitude oarsmen...?!
