Wilf Carter broadcast from New York on network radio before the war.
omeone at the studio named him Montana Slim. Thought it sounded better for a
owboy, I guess. A year or so later, while going home on a vacation he was in
n auto crash and barely survived. He required a very long recovery and was
eplaced on the radio program. But he kept the name because it was better
ecognized in the US. Jack

Carter's are easier to find then Hank's--but only in New England or upstate
ew York. I'm in Ohio so they don't get down here much
I'm not sure why they made him change his name to Montana Slim here in the
S--one reaosn may be that US Bluebird already had the CARTER Family and BO
ARTER [aka Bo Chatmon].
Note that both Snow and Carter recorded for Canadian Bluebird (B-4*) before
hey were known in the US; I have a number of these records, but I suspect
hey aren't easily found in the US?

Wilf [slim] was more obscure--his popularity was basically limited to
Canada and in the Nortern areas of the US.
but I was surprised that she had never even heard of Wilf Carter
r Montana Slim.
