To me this is the best New Orleans revival session ever recorded.
It is at the very start of the black revival, and was recorded in an empty real N.O. dance hall
(at a moment no whites could be desturbed by this noise).
Some Bunk recordings had been made in the previous years, but for this session Bunk was
not available and they got Kid Howard, who had not yet been recorded (except for some
private sessions).
Howard is amazing here, with a style and tone showing the influence of contemporary players
like Eldridge, and this lifts the band. Howard is much more interesting here than on his 50s titles
with Lewis.
Long ago I obtained the Blue Note LP, and later bought the complete sessions on Buck's
American Music label. I especially liked Milenberg Joys. The sides play rather long, and since the
musicians were not accustomed to 3-minute playing times, they sometimes overrun the available
recording space. You can also hear how the band starts a tune with some hesitation and then
after a few choruses is really steaming. It is not a string of solos with rhythm, but always you hear
the full band, with an emphasis on one of the horns. And those Kid Howard breaks are wonderful
(as Ives will confirm, I assume).
So this is not Ken Colyer, but the source for Ken Colyer.
A good moment to play them now.

Nothing to indicate where they were recorded (or copied), no name on them, only plain white labels with the titles typed and the words "NON-BREAKABLE & NOISELESS / USE ONLY SAPPHIRE OR SHADOWGRAPHED STEEL NEEDLE" printed at the bottom. I have no idea if these are a well known British Trad Band, some Ken Colyer or other..all I can do is list the titles and see if anyone recognizes them in these combinations.
