My favorite artist to cover Jimmie's tunes was Lefty Frizzell--just listen to his 1951 and '53 recordings!!

In these parts it's Ernest Tubb who is most identified with Jimmie Rodgers.
id your guide mention Tubb?
Rodgers spent his later years living in Kerrville, Texas because the climate
etter suited his health. Tubb had knocked around west Texas for several
ears trying to sound a lot like Rodgers. Mrs. Rodgers moved to San Antonio
fter Jimmie's death and in 1936 heard Tubb on a local radio show. She
ppreciated the many Jimmie Rodgers songs Tubb was performing and, even
hough she didn't think Tubb sounded like Jimmie, she became his musical
entor, helping set up tour dates and helping secure a Bluebird recording
ontract. She also lent Tubb Jimmie's touring car and gave him Jimmie's
amous Martin guitar.

Yesterday I visited the Jimmie Rodgers Museum in Meridian, Mississippi.
This is
n interesting little place with lots of memorabilia, including guitars,
urniture from Rodgers' home, many portraits of the Rodgers family and other
ountry stars and many old Rodgers 78s. I was surprised that the 78s were
in
uch dreadful shape - both the labels and the records were so deteriorated
that
hey could obviously never be played. They looked like they had been
cleaned
ith sandpaper. There were a couple of videos, (one with Cary Ginell
credited
s producer), and a lovely lady who was only too happy to share her
knowledge
nd enthusiasm for Jimmie Rodgers. She knew about Hank Snow and how he was
nspired by J.R., (not surprisingly since Hank Snow was involved in the
opening
f the museum), but I was surprised that she had never even heard of Wilf
Carter
r Montana Slim.
