Steven Barr says: “Apparently, RCA used the "Special Purpose"
designation for any pressings not
part of regular issues? I have seen a few of the earlier "DJ promo"
discs (they often have
the A side on both sides)...”
I was just checking LoC Sound Collection under Artie Shaw “victor” and
noted two 10-inch 78s in a short 44- dash range, each with the same “A”
side on both sides: 44-0001 “Begin the Beguine,” and 44-0003 “Star
Dust.” Other 44-dash items include 44-0004 Bennie Moten “South,”
44-0005 Tommy Dorsey “Marie,” 44-0006 Benny Goodman “King Porter,”
44-0008 Tommy Dorsey “Boogie Woogie,”44-0009 Fats Waller “Your Feets
Too Big,” 44-0010 Duke Ellington “Mood Indigo,” and 44-0011 Wayne King
“The Waltz You Saved Me.”
